Friday Afternoon On Construction
Clean up the site
pick up scraps, sheetrock, broken boards, leftovers
careful now, avoid nails, sharp edges
heave it all onto the old flatbed
tie it all down.
Lock up this old building
that once sheltered people and
soon will again but which for now
houses only tools, supplies and
dusty echoes of our worknoise.
Truck the trash away to the dump
toss it into the landfill
ease away from the hole.
Somebody lights a joint
on the way back to town
three of us in the old truck's
creaking, rattling cab
reggae on our boombox and
paychecks in our pockets.
High on Friday Afternoon.

ForwardI dedicate this collection to my sons, Jack, Leo, Jove
and Alex, and to all of the women who have loved
me, and to Dennis Holder, who showed me the
difference between writing and writing.
Many thanks to Wally lane, Paul Grajnert and all
my slam poet friends in Seattle, without whose
support and encouragement this collection would
never have happened.
Prior to initial publication, two of these poems,
"And Maria" and "Desperados" appeared in
Emeralds in the Ash, a Seattle publication featuring
slam performers. Others from the collection have
since appeared in various publications.
(This work was initially published by
Year of the Dragon Press, of Seattle,
under the title,
Nail and other hardworking poems
with the ISBN 0-96308034-9-2.). ___________________________ |
